Once in awhile a furniture maker gets asked to build a piece of furniture where there is a special challenge. This is one where our friend wanted a place to put small belongings as they come and go from their house; just simple open shelving with cubbie like divisions, places to put mittens, hat, dog collars, dog treats, books to go and so on. Taken literally a simple shelf unit would not do justice to the the entryway where it would be located. This interpretation led to a cabinet that helps to bring little joy while serving its primary purpose.
Custom desk: carcase and top are red oak, drawer fronts, bases and panels are elm, handles are padauk. Drawers run on hardwood rails with a piston fit in the pedestal boxes. The top is finished with hand rubbed polyurethane and the remainder is tung oil. The top's live edge and the figured elm panels help bring the warmth of nature's art into the profession environment.
